An Inconvenient Life

I was watching a show 2 weeks ago and a comedian, Jeff Garlin, who plays Jeff Green on Curb Your Enthusiasm, recently lost a lot of weight.  He also wrote a book about it and was promoting that book on the show, but his words stuck with me, "It is inconvenient to eat right."  WOW.

I mulled those words over until today as I spent the next week or so observing how right he was.

My experiment, make it yours and see how Inconvenient things can be to make healthy choices.

Go into your local mall and count how many food places there are, notice the food court restaurants that are in the mall.  The mall I frequent is 3 stories the food court has 15 fast food places to eat and around the mall there are over 12 places to grab a bit. The choices are not convenient.

Go down your local main street or the busiest street in your town or city and count how many restaurants, greasy spoons, fast food chains there are on the main strip.  Near my home, I counted 15.  The city I frequent there are over 50.  Again choices are not convenient.

Go into a chain restaurant and yes they have healthy choices, but face it they make the unhealthy choices look so much better and the desserts look even more desirable.  And have you seen those the proportions of the servings they give you?  To be honest it is too much for one person and not convenient.

At my favorite steakhouse, when my daughter and I go out, I order a 15 oz rib eye and she the Cobb salad (which is served in a serving plate by the way) and ask for 2 extra plates and we split our meal because I noticed we were always asking for a to go box.  Now, we don't.  We have a meal that is more in proportion to what normal people eat and what is left over (very little now) I leave and don't feel as if I wasted my money.

Next, go to your favorite grocery store and notice how the food is placed and where it is located.  In the 3 grocery stores I frequent all I really need is on the right hand side, fruits and vegetables then meat and seafood.  Pretty much in all 3 stores are laid in that combination with maybe a deli or cooked food to sell thrown in.

The rest of the food you may need to aid in preparing your food or make it tasty can be placed on 3 shelves in very small section, but it is always spread out where you have to go up and down several aisle. And on these aisle other food that is not convenient.

You may begin to notice you really don't need the other food as it was mostly pre packaged high salt and sugar content food items.

BUT the 'foods' our kids love (junk) is always placed at eye level.  If you have a toddler in the cart, the junk is at their eye level, if they are older and walking with you, it is at their eye level still.  Bottom and middle shelves.  The healthier food is usually at the 3rd shelf where you can see it. Fighting with your kids over a tiger is not convenient.

Next check out.  What are you faced with? End caps with soda, energy drinks and maybe some water, then candy, chips, candy, gum, and magazines telling you how to quickly lose weight.  WHAT?

How is any of this convenient.

Yes, eating healthy, staying slim and keeping your weight under control, is very INCONVENIENT.  It is too easy and very convenient to drive-thru and pick up a quick meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  It is very convenient to turn left in the grocery store and buy food that is pre prepared and easier to fix, quicker to have on the table for the family. It is very convenient to pick up the items on the end cap aisle for a snack.

But where has all that convenience gotten us?

Being on the hCG diet, even after the hcg diet, eating healthier and maintaining weight loss long term is very inconvenient.  Daily you have to make a choice as to what lifestyle you want.

An convenient lifestyle that can lead to poor health; heart attack, clogged arteries, diabetes, overall malaise and obesity

OR....

An inconvenient lifestyle that can lead to overall better health, permanent weight loss, more energy and less disease and longevity.

Enjoy!
